Invisible orthodontics
Doesn't that sound great!
Unfortunately this is the real story -

  1. Braces inside the teeth (so you can't see them): These are very difficult to place and more difficult to keep in place. As the lower teeth bite under the upper teeth brackets stuck on these teeth tends to fall off easily. Other problems include trauma or injury to tongues as a result of he braces rubbing against it.
  2. Clear braces: These are becoming better and better with technological improvements. They are more expensive and we will be happy to discuss whether your orthodontic case is suitable for clear braces.
  3. Clear removable orthodontic guides: Widely advertised in the USA and Canada. These are only suitable for very minor orthodontic movement and are very expensive because a lot of laboratory costs.

Colorful orthodontics
The different colors seen in the mouths of people with braces is due to the different colored elastic rings or modules that hold the orthodontic arch wires in place. There is no increased cost for this and it helps make having braces fun!

Surgery
There are two broad groups of surgery associated with orthodontics:

  • The first group includes very minor procedures to the gums. Most minor procedures are performed under local anaesthesia and can be completed by your dentist or a specialist periodontist.
  • The second consists of jaw (orthognathic) surgery. Jaw or orthognathic surgery, as an adjunct to orthodontics, may be recommended for a small number of older adolescent and adult patients. Here the treatment involves working in conjunction with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
